50 years of partnership between Prescott and Caborca
A gala fiesta was held Saturday night at the Rowle Simmons Adult Center to celebrate Prescott and Caborca becoming sister cities fifty years ago. Mayors from both cities, Phil Good from Prescott and Abraham El Cubano Mier for Caborca, traded good natured comments. Good presented a commemoration plaque and Mier countered with a saddle, promising to bring the horse next year.
Noel Desousa, Presdident of Prescott-Caborca Sister Cities Association, and Jorge Mendoza Yescas, General Consul for Mexico in Phoenix, spoke about how the sister city program began under President Dwight Eisenhower as a way to bring people closer together to address common problems and bring mutual benefits. Yescas said that Prescott and Caborca showed that the ability of people of both sides of the border to talk with each other was so beneficial that he is working to develop more partnerships between other Arizona and Mexican towns.
The event was timed with the celebration of Mexican Independence Day on September 16. Traditional Mexican costumes were worn by several and folk dances were presented by two professional folkloric dancers. The evening ended with people filling the dance floor and dancing.
